3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Birding Safari
This 3-day birding expedition from Marrakech to the edge of the Sahara is designed for travellers who want to experience Morocco through its birds, not just its landscapes.
From the High Atlas Mountains to the vast dunes of Merzouga, this journey connects three of the country’s most important birding regions: alpine ecosystems, arid valleys, and Saharan desert habitat. Each stop is carefully chosen for its species diversity, seasonal activity, and photographic potential.
Led by expert birding guides, this is not a sightseeing transfer — it is a slow, intentional exploration of Morocco’s wild birdlife at sunrise, during migration corridors, and in the quiet golden hours of the desert.
- Crossing the High Atlas Mountains with key raptor observation points
- Birding stops in traditional Berber valleys and agricultural terraces
- Search for mountain species such as Tristram’s Warbler and Crimson-winged Finch
- Exploration of the Ziz Valley oasis system with desert-edge birding
- Arrival in Merzouga for Saharan specialist species at dusk
- Observation of desert birds including Desert Sparrow, Bar-tailed Lark, and Cream-coloured Courser
- Sunset birding session over the dunes of Erg Chebbi
- Night sky experience in a remote desert eco-camp
Itinerary
Day 1: Marrakech → High Atlas → Dades Valley (Mountain & Valley Birding)
Your journey begins early from Marrakech, heading into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. This is one of Morocco’s most important migration corridors, where raptors often ride the thermals above the ridgelines.
Along the way, we stop regularly for birding sessions in alpine scrub and rocky slopes. With a bit of luck, you may encounter Atlas Wheatear, Moussier’s Redstart, and Barbary Partridge, while the skies above may reveal Booted Eagle or Short-toed Snake Eagle.
As we descend into the Dades Valley, the landscape shifts into dramatic canyon systems and oasis agriculture. Here, cliff-nesting species such as Lanner Falcon and Blue Rock Thrush become more common.
Dinner and overnight stay in a traditional kasbah or eco-lodge overlooking the valley.
Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Merzouga (Oasis & Desert Transition)
After breakfast, we continue toward the Todra Gorges, one of Morocco’s most spectacular geological formations. The towering cliffs provide nesting grounds for Raven, Rock Dove, and Alpine Swift, while the surrounding palm groves attract warblers and desert-adapted passerines.
We then follow the ancient caravan routes toward the Ziz Valley, a lifeline oasis system that acts as a natural bird corridor between the Atlas and the Sahara.
This stretch is particularly productive for desert-edge species such as Fulvous Babbler, Desert Lark, and Brown-necked Raven.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, where the Sahara begins. A guided desert walk or 4×4 birding session takes place before sunset, targeting iconic species such as:
- Desert Sparrow
- Cream-coloured Courser
- Hoopoe Lark
- Bar-tailed Lark
As the sun sets over the dunes of Erg Chebbi, the desert comes alive with movement and sound. Overnight in a desert eco-camp under a clear Saharan sky.
Day 3: Merzouga → Draa Valley → Marrakech (Final Desert Birding & Return)
We begin before sunrise, the most active time for Saharan birdlife. Early morning birding around the dunes offers the best chance to observe desert specialists feeding and calling in soft light conditions.
After breakfast, we begin the return journey toward Marrakech, following a different route through the Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s longest palm oases.
Stops along the way provide additional opportunities for raptors and wetland-edge species in irrigated zones and seasonal riverbeds.
Depending on the season, sightings may include Osprey, Marsh Harrier, or migrating flocks passing through southern corridors.
Arrival in Marrakech is expected in the evening.
