Detailed 7-Day Itinerary: Morocco Atlas & Sahara Birding Tour from Marrakech
Day 1 — 6 April
Marrakech → High Atlas Mountains → Oukaimeden
Your birdwatching adventure begins with an early departure from Marrakech towards the beautiful High Atlas Mountains and the famous birding area of Oukaimeden.
As we climb into the mountains, the landscapes become greener, cooler, and full of bird activity. Along the way, we will look for several resident Moroccan species including Little Owl, Sardinian Warbler, Spotless Starling, Moroccan Magpie, House Bunting, Blue Rock Thrush, and the endemic Levaillant’s Green Woodpecker.
Oukaimeden is one of the best mountain birding locations in Morocco. Here we hope to observe the magnificent Crimson-winged Finch, Alpine Accentor, Alpine Chough, Rock Sparrow, Black Wheatear, and the beautiful Atlas Horned Lark.
This first day is a perfect introduction to Morocco’s mountain birdlife and spectacular scenery.

Day 2 — 7 April
Atlas Mountains → Ouarzazate → Boumalne Dades
After breakfast, we continue our journey through the High Atlas Mountains and cross the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass, one of the most scenic roads in Morocco.
Today offers excellent opportunities for raptor watching, with chances to see Long-legged Buzzard and Bonelli’s Eagle soaring above the valleys and cliffs.
We will stop near Amerzgane in search of the rare Maghreb Wheatear before continuing south through changing landscapes of mountains, kasbahs, and palm groves.
By evening, we arrive in Boumalne Dades where we enjoy dinner and accommodation in a charming local guesthouse.
Day 3 — 8 April
Boumalne Dades → Tagdilt Track
Today we explore the legendary Tagdilt Track, considered one of the finest birdwatching sites in Morocco for desert and steppe species.
The open rocky plains and semi-desert habitats are home to an impressive variety of birds. Species we hope to observe include:

Day 4 — 9 April
Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Goulmima → Merzouga

By sunset, we arrive in Merzouga near the famous Erg Chebbi dunes.

Day 5 — 10 April
Merzouga → Erg Chebbi Dunes → Rissani
Today is dedicated to exploring the magical Sahara Desert around Erg Chebbi, one of the highlights of the tour.
The dunes and desert habitats around Merzouga attract some of Morocco’s most fascinating desert bird species. During the day we may observe:

The route passes rocky hills, cliffs, dry valleys, and remote desert scenery where we may spot White-crowned Wheatear and Southern Grey Shrike.
Later, we stop at Barrage Mansour Eddahbi, an excellent wetland area attracting many bird species including:

After a full day of exploration, we arrive in Ouarzazate for dinner and overnight stay in a local hotel.

Ouarzazate → High Atlas Mountains → Marrakech
On the final day of our Morocco birdwatching adventure, we travel back to Marrakech through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains.
We cross the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass at around 2,260 meters above sea level, enjoying beautiful panoramic views and several stops along the road for birdwatching, photography, and relaxation.
At the end of the tour, we transfer you to your accommodation in Marrakech or directly to the airport.
