Detailed Itinerary of 9 Days Morocco Birding Tour — Anti-Atlas, Sahara Edge & Souss Region (From Marrakech)

Day 1 — Oued Massa → Oued Souss (Feb 14th)

Your journey begins on the Atlantic coast near Agadir with a full day of birding in two of Morocco’s most important wetland sites: Oued Massa and Oued Souss.

At Oued Massa, we search for secretive and iconic species such as:

  • Black-crowned Tchagra
  • Marbled Duck
  • Moussier’s Redstart
  • Sardinian Warbler
  • Little Owl
  • Ruddy Shelduck
  • Laughing Dove
  • Brown-throated Martin

In surrounding fields and scrub, we also look for the endangered Northern Bald Ibis.

Later, at Oued Souss, we explore excellent wetland habitats rich in flamingos, shorebirds, gulls, and terns.

Dinner and overnight stay in Agadir.

Day 2 — Agadir → Boumalne Dades (Feb 15th)

Today we travel inland towards the Anti-Atlas region and Boumalne Dades.

Depending on time, we may make birding stops along the way, searching for shrikes and open-country species in the changing landscapes.

As we move east, the scenery transforms from coastal plains to arid valleys and rocky hills.

Dinner and overnight stay in Boumalne Dades.

Day 3 — Tagdilt Track & Surroundings (Feb 16th)

Today we explore the famous Tagdilt Track, one of Morocco’s top birding sites for desert and steppe species.

Target birds include:

  • Red-rumped Wheatear
  • Hoopoe Lark
  • Temminck’s Lark
  • Short-toed Lark
  • Thekla Lark
  • Trumpeter Finch
  • Cream-coloured Courser
  • Thick-billed Lark

We also visit a rocky canyon area where Maghreb Wheatear, Desert Lark, and Pharaoh Eagle Owl can be found in dramatic cliff habitats where traditional cave dwellings still exist.

Dinner and overnight stay in Boumalne Dades.

Day 4 — Boumalne Dades → Todra Gorge → Merzouga (Feb 17th)

We begin the day exploring steppe habitats before heading towards the spectacular Todra Gorge.

At Todra Gorge, we search for:

  • Tristram’s Warbler
  • Black Wheatear
  • Blue Rock Thrush
  • Rock Dove
  • Crag Martin

We continue east towards the Sahara Desert and arrive in Merzouga near the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Dinner and overnight stay in a desert lodge.

Day 5 — Erg Chebbi Dunes Exploration (Feb 18th)

A full day dedicated to exploring the vast Erg Chebbi desert system, one of the richest desert birding areas in Morocco.

We search for classic Sahara species such as:

  • Desert Sparrow
  • Fulvous Babbler
  • Greater Hoopoe Lark
  • African Desert Warbler
  • Brown-necked Raven
  • Desert Lark
  • Bar-tailed Lark
  • Spotted Sandgrouse
  • Crowned Sandgrouse
  • Lanner Falcon
  • Desert & Spectacled Warblers
  • Trumpeter Finch
  • Southern Grey Shrike

We also scan the skies for migrating storks and raptors.

At seasonal lakes (if present), we may observe waterbirds and waders, while at dusk we search for Egyptian Nightjar at roost sites.

Dinner and overnight stay in Merzouga.

Day 6 — Merzouga → Midelt via Anti-Atlas (Feb 19th)

We leave the Sahara and travel through dramatic landscapes of rocky valleys, gorges, and mountain passes towards Midelt.

Possible sightings include:

  • Crowned Wheatear
  • Atlas Wheatear (depending on conditions)
  • Tristram’s Warbler at Tizi n’Tlghomt Pass

Dinner and overnight stay in Midelt.

Day 7 — Midelt & Zaida Plains (Feb 20th)

Today we focus on one of Morocco’s most challenging and exciting species: Dupont’s Lark.

We leave early at sunrise and explore high plateau habitats near Zaida, searching carefully for this elusive species.

Other possible birds include:

  • Various larks
  • Houbara Bustard (possible in suitable areas)

This is a dedicated field day with patient searching and desert steppe exploration.

Dinner and overnight stay in Midelt.

Day 8 — Midelt → Cedar Forests → Azrou → Marrakech (Feb 21st)

We travel through the Middle Atlas Mountains, exploring the famous cedar forests of Azrou.

Here we may observe:

  • Barbary Macaque
  • Atlas Flycatcher
  • European Serin
  • Common Nightingale
  • Chaffinch
  • Great Tit

After forest birding, we continue towards Marrakech with optional stops along the route.

Dinner and overnight stay in Marrakech.

Day 9 — Marrakech → Asni → Oukaimeden (Feb 22nd)

Final day in the High Atlas Mountains.

We travel from Marrakech to Oukaimeden, passing cultivated valleys and mountain landscapes.

In lower areas we search for:

  • Moussier’s Redstart

Higher up near Oukaimeden (2600m), we search for alpine specialties:

We then return to Marrakech for drop-off at your hotel.
